Jane's Interview

"Bubble baths...champagne...soothing music..." Mok chanted as he rubbed his temples, waiting for the next convict. So many candidates, so little patience. And not enough pills in the world to deal. "I need new assistants..." he groaned. After thirty years of doing this, it was a wonder he had any shred of sanity left. He perked up when he heard the door open, and straightened himself, fixing a smile on his lips to greet the lady.

Jane pressed her lips together into a thin line, taking a deep breath before heading out to where the obviously annoyed man sat. She walked slowly towards him, her eyes fixed on the chair she presumed she was to sit in. She sat down quietly and ran her hands over the wrinkles sitting down created in her skirt.

"Good afternoon, Miss Porter." Mok said warmly, "I'm sure you're wondering why you've been brought here. You've committed a very serious crime, but we would still like to extend an offer: to participate in a competition that will last for almost a year and be broadcast across the country! Should you win, all charges against you will be dropped and you will also be given a handsome reward of nine hundred thousand dollars. Do you accept?"

Jane fixed her eyes on the man across from her, examining his face for any hint of sarcasm, but there was none. She starred at him for a moment, contemplating her options (which she really didn't have many of), and said "I accept." sharply.

"Wonderful!" Mok chuckled. Good, another one down. One less interview. "First things first: No killing during the competition, but you can injure other competitors. You will be allowed one phone call when you start, and then another twenty-seven days later. If you need help getting in contact with someone, just let me know and I'll track them down for you."

Jane's face stayed neutral as she replied with a small nod "alright, thank you." she replied flatly.

Mok added her file to the stack of those who'd accepted, which was thankfully larger than those who hadn't. "Good. Now, if there aren't any other questions, Thelonious will escort you back out."
